Janet Chambers
Account Leader, Harley Davidson
When Janet
joined Carmichael Lynch, she brought fresh perspective
to the Harley-Davidson team. And she’s been in the thick of
strategic
brand development ever since. The “Live By It” campaign
for Harley
Davidson represents an amazingly cohesive, far-reaching and
effective brand building story. One that Janet’s been involved
with
from inception to execution, including a media/technology “first”
unveiled at Sturgis in August.
Previously
at Fallon Worldwide, Janet thrived as the strategic leader
integrating multiple agencies and global partners on Citibank
projects. In fact, when Citibank needed someone to fill in for 3
months during a new product launch, Janet got the call and stepped
in admirably.
Janet is a
graduate of the University of Missouri Columbia School
of Journalism AND Harley-Davidson’s Rider’s Edge Program
(which
means she can take Carmichael Lynch’s Sportster out for a spin
anytime she needs road time).
Janet has
served on the board of Minneapolis non-profit arts
organization and volunteers with a therapeutic horseback riding
program.

Challenging
Preconceived Notions
Of ‘Good’ (and, ‘Bad’) Direct Mail
You’re finalizing
plans for your next direct mail project when a colleague
says something like this….
“These types of things
are expensive and they don’t work.”
“I get stuff like this all the time and I throw it away!”
“Our audience is different. They would NEVER respond to that!”
If you’ve ever heard
(or, made) any of these comments then please join
us for a humorous look at what we send and why.
We’ll talk about
what we think is ‘good’ direct mail, talk about your
real-life experiences while creating an appeal and promise you’ll
leave
with a little nugget of information that just might improve your direct
mail results.

Scholarship Recipient - Anna Clark
The April 2007 program,
as has become the custom at PMA, will be the presentation of the essay
of the recipient of the Lou Turley Professional Marketing Association
Scholarship for the 2007-08 academic year. This year the winner is
Anna Clark, a Marketing major with a concentration in Sales. Anna
is from Manitou, Kentucky in Hopkins County and she has a 3.88 gpa.
The topic of her essay and presentation is “Marketing to My
Generation.” A question and answer period will follow the presentation,
so come prepared to find out just how to market (effectively) to today’s
college students and young adults.
This is the eighth year
for the PMA scholarship, which was started in 2000-01. Anna will be
the ninth recipient of the $500 scholarship. In 2003-04, the committee
could not select between two applicants, so we awarded scholarships
to both. The scholarship was renamed two years ago in honor of Dr.
Lou Turley, a Marketing professor at Western Kentucky University who
was killed tragically in a scuba diving accident. Lou was one of the
early members of the Professional Marketing Association. Dr. Turley
served as the head of the Marketing Department at the time of his
death. Dr. Turley was the recipient of teaching awards at every university
at which he taught, including WKU. Although he was a tough teacher,
he was loved and respected by his students and his colleagues for
the energy and enthusiasm he brought to the classroom and to his research
and service, and his influence is still felt to this day by both his
students and his colleagues.

Disaster Preparedness / American Red Cross
At the March 20, 2007,
meeting, Jennifer O’Rourke from the South Central Kentucky Chapter
of the American Red Cross will be discussing Disaster Preparedness.
She will be bringing a sample Family Disaster Supplies kit and examples
of the types of food and other supplies one should have on hand in
case of emergency. Her talk will include information on how to develop
a family disaster plan as well as what employers and employees can
do to ensure
that a company can continue to function during an emergency.
Disaster Preparedness has
been a way of life for Mrs. O’Rourke since childhood. She is
originally from Kansas City, Missouri, which is in the part of the
United States known as “Tornado Alley.” During elementary
school, in addition to regular fire and tornado drills, she also has
vivid memories of bomb drills and remembers shopping for bomb shelters
with her parents during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Mrs. O’Rourke became
involved in Community Disaster Education as a VISTA, often referred
to as the “domestic Peace Corps,” in 2001. Although her
VISTA service has ended, she continues to do Disaster Preparedness
presentations.
A Registered Nurse by profession,
she became a “stay-at-home-Mom” shortly before her second
child was born. Since that time, she has not really stayed “at
home” because she has been heavily involved in volunteer work
for several organizations, including the American Red Cross, Girl
Scouts (for whom she is a Master Trainer), Boy Scouts, PTA, Band Boosters,
and several others.
Mrs. O’Rourke began
volunteering for the American Red Cross in St. Joseph, Missouri, in
1981 as a Water Safety Instructor, and Instructor certifications in
Lifeguarding, CPR and First Aid followed soon after. She served a
term as Water Safety Chairman on the Board of Directors of the Buchanan
County (Missouri) Chapter before moving to southern Indiana in 1987,
where she continued her Red Cross volunteer work with the Clark County
Chapter. During her time there, she also volunteered for the Floyd
County (IN), Louisville Area, and Bullitt County Chapters as well.
She has been volunteering for the South Central Kentucky Chapter since
moving to Bowling Green in 1989, and became a First Aid/CPR/AED
Instructor Trainer in 2002.

Marketing Campaign of the Year - WKU Sports
Director of Athletics Dr. Camden Wood Selig
Western Kentucky
Athletics has risen to the forefront of the Sun Belt Conference and
among the nation’s best thanks to the efforts of Dr. Wood Selig.
Selig, an administrator with more than 20 years of experience on the
collegiate level, was named Director of Athletics at Western Kentucky
University on Aug. 5, 1999, after serving in several different athletic
administrative roles at Virginia the previous 11-plus years.
Academics are a high priority
under Selig, witnessed by the one hundred and ninety one student-athletes
(out of approximately 400) who carried a 3.0 grade-point average in
the spring semester, with 182 posting a cumulative grade-point average
of 3.0 or better. In fact, WKU student-athletes who exhaust their
eligibility graduate at an 87 percent rate. Since arriving at WKU,
Selig has led a department that has claimed the Vic Bubas Cup —
presented to the Sun Belt Conference school which displays overall
excellence in the league’s 18 sports — on three occasions,
2001-02, 02-03, and most recently in 2005-06
Under his direction, the
football team claimed the school’s first NCAA Division I championship
in December 2002, WKU’s first national title in any team sport.
The football and men’s and women’s basketball teams all
reached postseason play in 2000-01, the first time in school history
they accomplished the feat in the same academic year — the trio
repeated it again in 2001-02, ’02-03 and ’04-05 . Western
squads have won 27 Sun Belt Conference championships (regular season
and/or tournament) in the last six years in men’s and women
basketball, volleyball, baseball, men’s and women‘s cross
country, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and men’s
track.
Under Selig’s direction,
WKU Athletics has completed a $33 million renovation to E.A. Diddle
Arena. Diddle Arena features a new academic advising center, new basketball
locker rooms and offices, a new 4,500-square foot weight room, new
training room and two new auxiliary gyms. Another $33.5 million project
is already underway, with the renovation and expansion of L.T. Smith
Stadium. Not only has he helped secure over $2.6 million in donations
toward endowing football scholarships at WKU, but he assisted the
Hilltopper Athletic Foundation as it raised more than $1 million each
of the last two years and increased membership with over 600 new supporters
in the last two years.
“Wood Selig has brought
a level of professionalism to the Athletic Director position at Western
Kentucky University that is unparalleled in athletic departments at
most institutions our size or larger,” said Western President
Dr. Gary Ransdell. “Under his astute leadership and direction,
our student-athletes and athletic programs have reached unprecedented
heights both in the classroom and in competition. I look with anticipation
to what the future holds.”
