LOU TURLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

PMA was founded in November 1992, and. Dr. Lou Turley, a popular professor of Marketing at Western Kentucky University was one of the very early members of the organization. From the day he joined, WKU’s Marketing Department has been and continues to be a major participant in the organization. PMA awarded its first WKU scholarship in 2000, and Dr. Turley served on the original committee.

The purpose of the scholarship is to give something back to the community and to the marketing profession -- which of course means so much to the members of PMA. The scholarship contributes toward helping a young student achieve goals both at WKU, and also in becoming a successful marketing professional. The award is given each spring semester and the winning student attends the April monthly meeting to give a short presentation to the PMA membership.

Dr. Turley, for whom the award is now named, received his undergraduate degree from Murray State University and his doctorate from University of Kentucky.  He was a favorite among college students, received many teaching awards, and was widely published.  He was always willing to take the time to help everyone – students, faculty, strangers, anyone.  He was always cheerful and supportive of others; always full of energy and life. In fact, many students attribute their decision to major or minor in the field Marketing to Dr. Lou Turley.

Dr. Turley died tragically on July 11, 2004 at Nags Head, N.C. in a scuba diving accident, but his influence lives on, both in PMA and at WKU.  It is only fitting that in 2005 the PMA scholarship, given each year to a junior or senior marketing student at WKU, was renamed the Lou Turley Memorial Scholarhsip.

The recipient of the PMA Scholarship must be a senior at Western Kentucky University with a major or minor in marketing. The recipient must have a minimum 2.8 cumulative grade point average and must show interest to pursue a career in the marketing field. The award will be in the amount of $1,000 and awarded yearly during the spring semester. The award is not renewable. If no applicant meets the requirement for any particular year, the earnings will remain in the fund per Article VII of the PMA BYLAWS.
